Geraldine Hoff Doyle, the inspiration behind the now-iconic Rose the Riveter WWII poster, has died at age 86 in Michigan.

The poster of a young woman in a factory uniform and red polka dot head kerchief, her arm flexed to show off her muscle with a speech balloon stating boldly, “We can do it!” was designed to encourage young woman to volunteer for the war effort while men were serving overseas.

Eventually 6 million women would heed the call and enter the workforce during the war years.

The image of Rosie the Riveter, itself inspired by a Norman Rockwell painting of the same name, became an instant classic and was later adopted by the women’s rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s.

There was also a 1942 song called “Rosie the Riveter” that paid homage to the women who worked during the war. Many women claimed to be the inspiration for Rosie and indeed there were film shorts and photographs that documented the phenomenon of women working on ballistics, airplanes and bombs.

On avait déjà parlé de Rosy à l’occasion d’une demande, une de plus, pour faire une réplique de l’affiche… avec les aisselles visibles et évidemment poilues. C’était en 2007. 6 ans se sont passés et AUCUNE réponse n’est venue de votre part. Ce ne sera QUE quand vous serez capable de faire VOTRE TRAVAIL que je vous présenterais des poilues.

Pour en revenir à Rosy, elle n’a pas existée en tant que telle, mais son personnage aurait été inspiré par Geraldine Hoff Doyle dans la célèbre affiche.

Autre source d’inspiration beaucoup moins connue est que l’année précédente une canadienne qui a réellement existée, Veronica Foster, a servie de modèle pour Ronnie, le personnage d’une affiche de l’industrie d’armement canadienne travaillant pour l’Angleterre et fabricant le fameux fusil-mitrailleur Bren (toujours en service aujourd’hui encore dans l’armée britannique sous la référence L4A4, mais en calibre 7.62 OTAN au lieu du 7.7 de l’époque). Mêmes couleurs, même thème, même fichu sur la tête, etc… Des ressemblances plus que convaincantes, non ?

Ronnie the Bren Gun Girl

During WW2 period, Bren guns were produced in Canada as well, by John Inglis Co., Toronto.
Veronica Foster, an employee at this firm, became popular as “Ronnie, the Bren Gun Girl” when posing for propaganda posters in early 1941.
Thus, she was the Canadian predecessor and equivalent of the American cultural icon “Rosie the Riveter”, representing nearly one million Canadian women who worked in the manufacturing plants that produced munitions and materiel during World War II.
